S Korea Approves Stem Cell Treatment For Heart Attack Victims

“…takes somatic stem cells extracted from the patient’s own bone marrow that are then cultured and directly injected into the damaged heart…the stem cell medication will help the damage cells regenerate and recover function.”

And they did so before the US.  Now who’s the 3rd world country?

CARDIAC STEM CELL

Five years after South Korea’s scientific reputation was shattered by a cloning research scandal, the country has approved stem cell medication for heart attack victims.

South Korea put stem cell research on hold after Hwang Woo-Suk was found guilty of fraud for his work in the field in 2005…

“This marks the government opening the road for progressive development in stem cell research,” Oh Il-hwan, professor of molecular biology at the Catholic University School of Medicine in Seoul, told Reuters…

The South Korean team is ahead of other stem cell researchers because it has shown the treatment as being good enough to win regulatory approval and make it available for clinical use.

The KFDA said that after six years of clinical trials, it had finalized all procedures needed to permit the sale of Hearticellgram-AMI, a stem cell therapy for acute myocardial infarction…

“We hope this will serve as a catalyst in the advancement of global stem cell research and its application.”…

Hearticellgram-AMI takes somatic stem cells extracted from the patient’s own bone marrow that are then cultured and directly injected into the damaged heart.

“Our first goal is to apply them in patients with illnesses that are not curable through conventional treatment procedures and medications,” FCB-Pharmicell Chief Executive Officer Kim Hyun-soo said from the company’s headquarters in Seongnam, south of Seoul.

FCB-Pharmicell said that the stem cell medication will help the damage cells regenerate and recover function.

It said patients have shown in the last six years of clinical trials that there has been a near 6 percent improvement in heart function six months after one dose of the injection.

SEOUL, South Korea — Hwang Woo-suk, a disgraced cloning expert from South Korea who had claimed major breakthroughs in stem-cell research, was convicted Monday of falsifying his papers and embezzling government research funds. A judge sentenced him to a suspended two-year prison term, saying Dr. Hwang had shown remorse and had not taken research money for personal use.

Korean University To Distribute Puppies Of World’s First Cloned Dog

Korean University To Distribute Puppies Of World’s First Cloned Dog

Yes, we know, this is not the type of story we usually follow. The truth? It is apparently a first even if, in itself, the event does not advance the cause of stem cell research. Seoul National University (SNU) said the nine dogs were all fathered by Snuppy, an Afghan Hound cloned by disgraced scientist Hwang Woo-suk in 2005, who, as it turns out, may have gotten some important things right without knowing it. According to a team led by George Daley at Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Hwang may have managed to create stem cells solely from human eggs, without fertilization with sperm. This breakthrough is possibly much more valuable than his original false claims about his work.

“Unfortunately,” said Daley, “at the time they published their work they did not know what they had done so they had mistakenly isolated these parthenogenic embryonic stem cells and misrepresented them as true clones.” The Daley team concluded that it is possible Hwang and his team managed to pull off the world’s first human case of parthenogenesis, or ‘virgin birth’, a conclusion that would seem to suggest that even with good research it’s preferable to know the meaning of what has been accomplished.

Stem cell research funding from the Korean government decreased from W35 billion in 2007 to W34.4 billion last year, according to the Postech Biotech Center (US$1=W1,480).

Meanwhile, the United States invested at least W1 trillion on stem cell research, and the United Kingdom W139 billion. Japan spent W127 billion and France W63 billion. Even Singapore and South Africa made greater investment than Korea, with W46 billion and W44 billion.

Korean researchers are regarded as world class in stem cell therapy to treat brain and vascular diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and atherosclerosis. Clinical trials of stem cell therapy are expected in Korea within one or two years.
