60 Minutes, Stem Cell Treatments – Snake Oil Salesmen

In STEM CELLS IN THE NEWS on April 18, 2010 at 9:17 pm

I would like to draw your attention to the recent 60 Minutes segment that made comparisons to Stem Cell Treatment Centers as “snake oil salesmen.”

This blog was created to help navigate the misinformation and confusion associated with the almost 500 treatment centers around the world.  Many of these treatments centers are inexperienced, use untested protocols or are merely “in it for the money.”  This blog was created to assist the patient interested in stem cell treatment but daunted and worried by the overwhelming mass of information and misinformation.  I helped create a set of rigorous standards by which these treatments centers have been assessed.  Only those facilities that have a proven history of success, safety, service and integrity meet the exceedingly high standards.

Stem Cell therapy is a young and rapidly evolving science.  New information appears everyday and the typical patient has no hope of wading through and evaluating the plethora of information that has come before and continues to be generated by doctors and scientists around the world.  I can help to find the best treatment center for you, your condition and your situation and give you the confidence to make an educated and informed decision when choosing stem cell treatment protocols, treatment centers and doctors that will perfectly cater to your needs and concerns.

The problem was not the concept of treating ALS with stem cells…in fact, Stem Cell treatment of ALS has a history of success since Feb, 2009 –

“In a [February, 2009] published clinical stem cell research study, adult stem cells were shown to help delay Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) progression and improve an ALS patient’s quality of life. This research study was believed to be the first published study comparing ALS patients who had their own stem cells injected into their brain vs a control group…

The initial two year clinical test study results of the stem cell procedure was published in Cytotherapy, February, 2009. Positive results were confirmed through both clinical observation and MRI tractography.  It is considered by many within the international neurological community to be the foremost procedure available for minimizing or abrogating ALS symptoms and extending the lifespan of ALS patients. The procedure is a state of the art use of autologous CD-133 (+) stem cells injected into the frontal cortices for the effective replacement of motor neurons.”

(There are also a number of other clinical trials currently ongoing to further test the safety and efficacy of Stem Cell treatment of ALS.)
