College Student With Multiple Sclerosis Symptom-Free After Stem-Cell Treatment

Monday, February 23, 2009

Edwin McClure, a Virginia Commonwealth University advertising graduate student, says a stem-cell study he participated in appears to have cured his multiple sclerosis symptoms.

McClure said being hooked up to an IV for the steroid treatments forced him to confront this sickness. He suffered from extreme fatigue, allergy attacks, heat intolerance and bad balance. McClure said his symptoms made it difficult to spend time with his loved ones.

The trial used the patient’s own stem cells to regenerate the immune system and reverse the symptoms of MS. The trial consisted of 21 patients. According to the lead author of the study, this is the first study to show an actual reversal of the disease.

EMBRYONIC SCIENTIST/DOCTOR TALKS ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF USING ADULT STEM CELLS FOR MS

In his career as a neurologist Dr. Jack Kessler had treated many paralyzed patients with no hope of recovery, but he never felt so powerless as he did on an emergency midnight flight last year to be at the side of his injured daughter.

Kessler, chair of neurology at Northwestern University, knew his 15-year-old daughter Allison had just lost virtually all movement from the waist down in a skiing accident. As a father, he hoped beyond reason that she might just shake off the injury to her spine; but as a doctor he knew she had little chance of ever walking unaided again.

Still on the plane, Kessler decided to drop his previous research on nerve disorders linked to diabetes and seek out stem cell treatments for paralysis.

In this video, Kessler talks about the benefits of using Adult Stem Cells to treat MS.

babyBaby to cure thalassaemic mom?

19 Feb 2009, 0609 hrs IST, Pinaki Das, TNN

HOWRAH: When 24-year-old thalassaemia patient Pinky Barman sought to get pregnant last year, her parents squirmed. Her doctor wasn’t sure if she could carry it through and husband Abinash, a non-thalassaemic, thought she was being too ambitious. On Wednesday morning, she gave birth to a boy after months of treatment and medical supervision during which she received at least 15 transfusions.

The newborn has not only brought smiles back to the Barman household but could also cure his mother of the potentially life-threatening ailment. Stem cells taken from cord blood are being used to treat Pinky’s thalassaemia, which, doctors said, has never happened anywhere in the world.

Pope admonishes Pelosi on duty to protect unborn

VATICAN CITY (AFP) — Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday admonished visiting US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Catholic who advocates abortion rights, that “all Catholics” should uphold the Church’s teachings on life.

Benedict “took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church’s consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death,” the Vatican said in a statement.

These “enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists as well as those responsible for the common good of society to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development,” the statement said.

Pelosi, the highest-ranking US official to see the pope since President Barack Obama took office last month, describes herself as an “ardent” Catholic while advocating reproductive rights.

Carroll: New seven deadly sins have relevance to business

Athens Banner-Herald | Story updated at 3:34 pm on 2/21/2009

My last column addressed the “old” seven deadly sins. That list included pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed and sloth.

To be sure, each of these in various forms can have adverse consequences as they are manifested in the workplace.

Today’s subject is the set of “new” deadly sins as articulated by the Vatican last year. Reverberating from the seven cardinal vices, set forth by Pope Gregory I in the 6th century, the new list combines a social dimension, according to Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, the Vatican spokesman.

…The new seven mortal sins include: genetic modification, human experimentation, polluting the environment, social injustice, causing poverty, financial gluttony and drug abuse. Each of these has a business ethics dimension and relevance today…

► The category of human experimentation apparently is directed toward some morally dubious (embryonic) stem-cell research.

According to a member of the President’s Council on Bioethics, the debate over (embryonic) stem-cell research centers on the basic question regarding the moral status of a human embryo.

The public has been divided on (embryonic) stem-cell research. A recent survey found that 61 percent of the adults polled supported it and 31 percent opposed it.

One big issue in this arena seems to be how the embryos were obtained…

One of my favorite quotes is by Margaret Mead, the world renown cultural anthropologist, who said, “Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For, indeed, that’s all who ever have.”
