STEM CELLS – MAGIC OR SCIENCE?

A friend asked:

“I would like nothing more than to beleive adult stem cell working for different diseases, however I don’t. How can you take a sick cell and replant it and it becomes healthy.”

My answer:

HIGH TURNOVER RATE
This is not magic, it is biological fact. Let’s start with your body. “Just like us, cells grow old and die. When old cells die, new ones replace them. For example, a blood cell in our body lives for about 120 days. Another example is our skin cells. We shed our skin cells about every 35 days.” That’s the outer layer which is why tattoos fade over time and why tattoos go deep into the lower levels of skin.

I’M DYING! YES, WE ALL ARE…
So our cells are in a constant state of “getting older” or “getting sick” or moving towards “impaired function.” I’m dying says the soldier with the sucking chest wound. Yes, we all are, says his philosopher friend. And we are indeed. “He not busy being born is busy dying.” says Bob Dylan. Perhaps this is too philosophical but the point is this: our body and every one of the 5-50 trillion cells is either getting older and weaker and dying or is currently being born or repaired. It’s a dynamic entity, this shell we reside in and it is constantly changing.

GETTING DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS
If you have too many cells with impaired function, especially in a specific area, which are damaged, necrotic, not getting enough nutrients, minerals etc and are getting exposure to too many toxins, inflammation, infections, etc which it can not eliminate, then something will go wrong and you will get sick with the capital ‘S’ and it is time to call in the workers to fix you up.

BOB THE BUILDER HAS SOME COMPETITION
Stem cells are the body’s construction workers. They do both renovations and they do ground up construction. Renovations amount to taking dead tissue and cells – necrotic – and re-energizing them so they come back to life (no zombie jokes please). This can be seen in hundreds of heart studies and trials and thousands of congestive heart failure patients where necrotic heart tissue implanted with stem cells was found to be living and beating a few weeks later. Ground up construction is where they set up shop on a blank field and build something new. This can be seen when stem cells create mini bypasses where stents were implanted. They are actually smart enough to know the “stent area” is a dangerous heavy traffic area and even if the stent is working, they will create offramps and onramps around the stent or bypasses with capillaries. Pretty cool huh?

YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT
Not magic, just plain old science and if your body was able to produce enough stem cells to run to the heart, it could do it by itself. In fact, it is trying, desperately to do exactly that but the body in congestive heart failure is like a single mother with 6 kids, 3 jobs and 2 dogs standing on one foot and juggling chain saws. She just can’t do it all, she is stretched to the limits of her endurance, something has to give…and it does. So while your body is sending stem cells to the heart, and the feet and the pancreas, liver, kidney, brain, endocrine and lymphatic and circulatory system infrastructure, RIGHT NOW, to renovate and build new cells and tissues, it is not sending ENOUGH and the fact that our single mom smokes and lives near a factory and does other people’s laundries, exposing herself to multiple chemical toxins, doesn’t sleep much, can only afford McD’s and is highly stressed, etc etc just taxes her body all the more.

RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW
So YOU have stem cells in YOUR body RIGHT NOW which are running around, differentiating into different cell types and healing you. All the time. So while our bodies are in a constant state of degradation, our stem cells are constantly fighting that degradation.

WANT THE SCIENCE?
If you would like trials and studies to back this up there are about 2,600 at last count and I can refer you to some that address a specific condition.

The debate ended 2.5 years ago but the battle still wages on! SO much has changed in 2.5 years  yet so much remains the same. 

The world has embraced the knowledge that adult stem cells can treat almost anything with safety and success but nobody in the USA knows about it because they are not available here and considered “unapproved by the FDA.”

Maybe we can enlist the “Occupy Wall Street” peeps to make some huge needed changes in our health care and available treatments.  – David

The Stem Cell Debate Is Over! ...sort of...

The Wisdom of Oz

Visualize the surreal image of Oprah Winfrey, Michael J Fox and Dr. Mehmet Oz, wearing purple surgical gloves, sitting on stage around a human brain. Dr. Oz explains the absence of Nigro-Striatal Neurons in the brain of Parkinson’s patients while lifting out partially dissected chunks of brain and placing them into Michael’s shaking hand.

The camera zooms in as Dr. Oz steadies Michael’s hand in his. Dr. Oz weaves an intimidating, steel needle between Michael’s gloved and trembling fingers and illustrates the procedure for injecting stem cells into the brain by plunging it both into and through the quivering cerebellum. Michael’s legs spasm and contort and my stomach clenches empathetically with what I sense is Michael’s extreme discomfort, but is really a symptom of his condition.

And yet, NOTHING could have prepared me for what happened next as Dr. Oz, unbelievably and without prelude or warning, makes the stunning statement:
“I think, Oprah, the stem cell debate is dead.”

“The problem with embryonic stem cells is that embryonic stem cells come from embryos, like all of us are made from embryos, and those cells can become any cell in the body, but it’s very hard to control them and so they can become cancer.”

While astonished by his public announcement, I soon began to wonder: “why did Dr Oz only briefly allude to the potential of iPS cells and the proven benefits of adult stem cell treatments?” And then it became clear.

Dr Oz recognizes that the average person on an American street is led to believe, “a stem cell is an embryo is a stem cell”. Due to years of misleading media saturation, as far most Americans know, there are no other stem cells besides embryonic. Walk down the street and ask someone “what is an adult stem cell…what is an iPS cell”, and your inquiries will surely be met by blank stares.

So in retrospect, what Oz DID do, was truly…amazing.

Shunning the history of the love/hate affair Americans have with Embryonic stem cell research and ignoring the majority of US media over the past 5 years, the decrees of President Obama’s funding policies, the positions of the FDA and AMA and the fruitless decade long public pursuit of embryonic cures undertaken by Michael J Fox (with the benevolent and optimistic spirit of Christopher Reeve hovering over him) and before the bewildered eyes of Michael, Oprah and ~7.2 million viewers, Dr Mehmet Oz nailed the coffin shut on ESC treatments:
“I think, Oprah, the stem cell debate is dead.”

With this one simple statement on national TV, Dr Oz has taken the first step towards educating the American public about the current insurmountable limitations of embryonic stem cells and cracked open the door to the American collective mind-set regarding the potential of iPS cells and the reality that Repair stem cells (RSC) have been treating diseases around the world successfully for a decade. Despite the fact that thousands of American doctors refer to RSC as “snake oil,” more and more American patients are realizing that the US medical system is faltering, dated and just not working while the greatest medicine the world has ever seen is available just beyond the borders of their own country.

The seeds planted by Dr Oz will take a long time to find purchase in the collective American mind-set. There is too much embryonic momentum, media and drama, and America loves drama. Embryonic stem cells will not go away and like Romeo and Juliet, this love/hate affair may have to run its course for most, despite Dr Oz stealing the “distilled liquor” and Romeo’s poison and dagger in an attempt to avoid all of the deaths at the end of this play.

One step at a time we will climb this mountain and slowly open American eyes to improve their knowledge of treatment options so all can intelligently exercise the freedom of choice in their individual medical care. One inch at a time, Oz wisely created a pathway to an amazing new world of available medical treatments for what were previously believed to be incurable diseases and are in fact treating patients successfully around the world.

Dr Oz took this first step and it was a HUGE first step!

So from where I am sitting, I would like to express my heartfelt and sincerest appreciation for Dr Oz’s bravery, statements and actions. Thank you, Dr. Oz and thank you Oprah; for allowing this sage doctor the forum to break the walls restricting millions of Americans from the knowledge of the medical treatment options they so unquestionably deserve.

Here is the actual transcript based on my ears and fingers and a lot of patient rewinding:

“I think we are single digit years away from making a big impact in the lives of Parkinson’s disease but also diabetics, heart disease, people who have had a lot of problems.”

U.S. Medicare rules seek improved care, lower costs

This program will create a financial incentive for doctors to take more interest in a patient’s follow up care, thereby, providing better care.
There are some who say that the entire medical and pharma system is based on making money and not on getting you better.  I guess this proves it.
The promise of “better care for patients” apparently wasn’t enough in order to get this program off the ground…they had to both pay doctors more AND show a savings to the government.
While I applaud the program to increase follow up care, this seems to me like doctors are now going to get paid more to do what they should already be doing (and are doing in other countries).
The USA medical system is ranked 37th in the world by the World Health Organization.

(Reuters) – U.S. Medicare regulators on Thursday launched a program for doctors to deliver more follow-up care to patients that they predict will save the government as much as $960 million over the next three years while providing better healthcare for the elderly.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services proposed rules under President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul setting out guidelines for doctors and hospitals who form so-called accountable care organizations to deliver Medicare services.

The idea, called coordinated care, is to give primary care physicians a financial incentive to follow up on patients who are sent to the hospital or prescribed a course of treatment.

The traditional pay for service structure provides no such incentives, which take the form of a share of any cost savings.

“We’ve known for a long time that too many Americans fail to get the best care when they walk into a hospital or a doctor’s office,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a telephone press conference.

“One in every five Medicare beneficiaries who leaves the hospital is back within 30 days. In many cases it is because they failed to receive the correct follow up care,” she added…

There are four approaches to heart transplant patients:

1. Wait for a donor heart
2. Insert a plastic heart
3. Implant adult stem cells

Heart disease threatens the lives of millions, but with only limited hearts available for transplant, medical science has long yearned for a definitive fix to repair or replace this most vital organ. 

Troy Golden, a pastor from Oklahoma, was born with a heart that would one day break. A genetic condition known as Marfan’s syndrome has been slowly attacking his body tissue since birth including around his heart and valves.

At the age of 41, he had to undergo life-saving surgery, replacing valves and reshaping his heart’s walls. But his condition continued to worsen. In January 2010, he was put on the heart transplant list, but time ran out without a donor.

“Troy’s heart was so bad that a traditional heart pump wouldn’t be enough,” explains Troy’s cardiologist Dr Doug Horstmanshof. “So, we decided to try something different – completely replacing the heart.”

In September last year, Troy became one of the few people in the US to have his entire heart replaced with a device called the Total Artificial Heart. It’s made of plastic and weighs 160 grams and is a little larger than a biological heart. It is powered by a pneumatic pump that you carry around in a rucksack.

Awe inspiring moment

Dr James Long, Troy’s surgeon, recalled the moment the heart was implanted into Troy. “It was admittedly rather awe-inspiring,” he says. And it was ominous to look inside the chest and know that the only thing keeping him alive was the synthetic pump that we had just replaced his heart with.”

Troy has had to get used to the non-stop sound of the pneumatic pump. But he looks and feels remarkably well and is overwhelmed by what has been done for him.

“It’s awesome,” he said “to be out of the hospital and to be able to come back home and to be able to come back to some normal life.”

“You can’t even just really comprehend taking your heart out, you know, without a heart you’re not alive.”

The Total Artificial Heart has done more than buy Troy some time. It has given him his life back and it has given him hope. But this is not a permanent solution. His heart’s batteries must be constantly charged, spares must stand at the ready. The risk of infection and clotting add to the constant worry.

Medical challenge

For now Troy must again endure the long wait for a donor heart, but there are other solutions on the horizon. New avenues of research are focussing on efforts to assist, rather than replace the heart.

Increasingly, in patients suffering from heart failure, miniaturised pumps are being used to assist heart function. They are about the size of a cigar and are essentially plugged into the main pumping chamber of the heart to help it along.

Unlike Troy’s artificial heart, they can be left in place indefinitely. But perhaps more remarkable is the fact that these pumps can sometime be removed, once a damaged heart has recovered.

And it is the potential for hearts to actually recover, after having been damaged, that is being investigated in some of the most exciting research going on today.

Much interest centres on stem cells because they are the closest natural thing to the body’ s spare parts and, under the right conditions, they have the potential to transform into a huge number of different cell types with specialised functions. Because of this, they can take part in the process of renewal – replacing diseased and damaged tissues.

Preliminary results are highly controversial, but there is a growing body of evidence that suggests we may in the future be able to harness the heart’s potential regenerative capacity for future therapies.

While their search for that magic bullet remedy is far from at an end, each new discovery brings them another step closer.

Stem cells may hold secret to multiple spinal injury repair

Scientists may soon be able to repair multiple aspects of a spinal cord injury in humans, using adult stem cells.

A Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine study involving rats showed that use of multipotent adult progenitor cells (mapc) could prevent neuron retraction, promote new neuron re-growth and reduce inflammation in spinal injury.

Researchers will no doubt be hopeful that the development of such treatment can contribute significantly to reducing the costs of spinal injury treatment, which can range between $500,000 (£312,000) and $3 million (£1.9 million) in the US.

Commenting on the findings, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, university professor Jerry Silver explained: “Using preclinical models of spinal cord injury, we found that MAPC can both dynamically regulate macrophages, which cause inflammatory damage, and stimulate neuron growth simultaneously.

“Our results demonstrate that MAPC convey meaningful therapeutic benefits after spinal cord injury.”
