Well, you probably don’t expect Pope John Paul II and Bible-toting Bill to agree on abortion. So you were probably not surprised that, after Clinton announced the Final Federal Guidelines on Pluripotent Stem Cell research

last week, the pope immediately addressed in English an international congress being held in Rome of the Transplantation Society.

The Pope said, “Attempts at human cloning with a view to obtaining organs for transplants … insofar as they involve the manipulation and destruction of human embryos, are not morally acceptable.”

Now some newsies reported that the pope had come out against “cloning” humans, which he hadn’t. And from some news accounts you may have supposed that Bill Clinton had completely reversed his position of only three years ago, prohibiting the cloning of humans, which he hadn’t.

Embryonic Stem Cell Studies Front Page News as Better Adult Studies Ignored

Good grief.  Here we go again.

The SF Chronicle has a front page story about the fourth human subject to receive an embryonic stem cell-derived injection of cells.  From the story:

A Bay Area patient who recently suffered a serious spinal cord injury and is now paralyzed from the waist down joined the world’s first-ever embryonic stem cell study in humans last week, when Stanford doctors injected 2 million cells designed to replace damaged neurons in the patient’s spine. The patient, who is not being identified, is the fourth person to be enrolled in the clinical trial being run by Menlo Park’s Geron Corp. and the first person in California. The patient, whose participation in the trial was revealed Tuesday, received the stem cell injection Saturday at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and is now at the rehabilitation center there.

And no matter what happens, the test is an advance!

Regardless of the outcome, the study is a major step forward in stem cell research, researchers say, and scientists from all over the field will be watching the results carefully.

Here’s the thing:  This isn’t news.  The patient is merely the fourth person enrolled in an uncompleted safety study of six (I think that’s the number).  The California angle is just an excuse for a press release and a fawning front page story pushing ESCR.

At the same time, there have been years of successful and peer reviewed adult stem cell studies involving patients paralyzed by spinal cord injury–in which patients have had feeling restored–which went virtually unreported.  If it isn’t embryonic, to the MSM, it often just isn’t worth mentioning.

Think I exaggerate?  Let’s take a look at one from 2009.  Paralyzed patients who had no use of their legs, were able to ambulate after a combination of surgery and adult stem cell therapy.  From the Wayne State University press release:

The injuries in the study patients were 18 months to 15 years old. The patients, ages 19 to 37, had no use of their legs before the treatment. One paraplegic treated almost three years after the injury now ambulates with two crutches and knee braces. Ten other patients ambulate with physical assistance and walkers (with and without braces). One 31-year-old male tetriplegic patient uses a walker without the help of knee braces or physical assistance. When the stem cell transplant and scar removal process was combined with an advanced form of rehabilitative training that employs brain-initiated weight-bearing movement, 13 patients improved in the standard measures used to assess functional independence and walking capabilities. 

Did you miss the front page stories about this very encouraging early study?  Yea, me too. (Here’s a link to the peer reviewed published report.)

I somehow also missed the headlines about restored feeling for subjects with total loss of sensation published in Spinal Cord:

Thirty-nine consecutive patients with diagnosed complete cervical and thoracic SCI for at least 2 years and with no cortical response in the SSEP study of the lower limbs were included in the trial. The trial patients underwent peripheral blood stem cell mobilization and collection. The stem cell concentrate was cryopreserved and reinfused through arteriography into the donor patient. The patients were followed up for 2.5 years and submitted to SSEP studies to evaluate the improvement in SSEPs after undifferentiated cell infusion. Twenty-six (66.7%) patients showed recovery of somatosensory evoked response to peripheral stimuli after 2.5 years of follow-up. 

This general ignoring of adult successes and boosting less impressive embryonic studies has been going on a long time, as I reported in “The Great Stem Cell Coverup,” published in the Weekly Standard back in 2006.

So, in summary: The media often over report embryonic stem cell stories and badly under report better results when they happen with adult stem cells.  Just another example of media often not reporting the actual story, but the story they want to report.

You see, Britain, like the USA, is chasing this fleet footed “embryonic stem cell treatment comedy of errors” around and around in circles just like in the Benny Hill episodes.  Every week, the same scene is played out with Benny running, the entire cast chasing and he never gets caught.  So in Art, so in life.  Britain is chasing embryonic stem cells used for treatment of optic diseases.  And remember…

  • Embryonic stem cells STILL have ZERO successful clinical trials
  • Embryonic stem cells STILL cause cysts and tumors that can become cancerous (wait 20 years and ask again though)
  • Embryonic stem cells STILL have rejection issues that require immunosuppressive drugs
  • Embryonic stem cells STILL carry the genetic anomalies of the donor
ON THE OTHER HAND…

So on top of wasting time chasing a cure with no prior history of success and huge negative side effects, thy are running right past a treatment with a huge history of success and safety and trials.

So cue up the cameras, get everyone in costume and let’s start that famous music going as everyone chases embryonic stem cell treatments around and around.  Wait! STOP! Hold it! CUT!

How on earth can we explain the entire medical community and government running right past what already works?  Got it! Give them all blindfolds!  That way they can be assured to miss the forest but they will hit every damn tree in it and so will the patients, patiently waiting for treatments which will never come!

…annndddd   ACTION!!!

ADULT CELLS, STEM CELLS & CANCER

Wow, this one was devious!! Some of these articles must be read very carefully as they are misleading and confusing, perhaps even intentionally so.

but later in the article refer to them as ‘adult cells…’

and even later as ‘induced pluripotent stem cells.’

But don’t be fooled by this semantic sleight of hand.

Induced pluripotent stem cells are semantically ‘adult cells’ only in the sense that all cells in an adult can be referred to as adult cells.  Perhaps this is the author’s attempt to make them distinct from embryonic cells. In any case, if your friend asks you for an APPLE from the MARKET, it is not acceptable to bring him back a BAG OF FLOUR just because they both can be “found at a MARKET.”

ANd let’s be clear.  Only ADULT STEM CELLS have thousands of studies and trials and thousands of patients treated safely and effectively.  Induced pluripotent stem cells have NONE.  And while Induced pluripotent stem cells ARE a manipulated type of ‘stem cell,’ they have a lot of problems too, as the article owns up to (one of the problems) in the end:

potential side effects need to be considered. iPS cells may develop into other harmful cells in the body.”

              “other harmful cells in the body”  =  tumors, cysts, cancer

THEY HAVE TO SOLVE THE ISSUES OF REJECTION & CANCER BEFORE THEY CAN

  1. USE THESE CELLS TO COMBAT CANCER!!
  2. USE THESE CELLS IN STEM CELL TREATMENTS!!

(dichotomy? I think so, makes me think of vaccines where you get injected with the disease to build anti-bodies to the disease.)

But the good news is, there are cancer treatments out there with high results and low or virtually no side effects that make chemo and radiation look ineffective and barbaric by comparison!

Stem cells, potential source of cancer-fighting T cells

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2011) — Adult stem cells from mice converted to antigen-specific T cells — the immune cells that fight cancer tumor cells — show promise in cancer immunotherapy and may lead to a simpler, more efficient way to use the body’s immune system to fight cancer, according to Penn State College of Medicine researchers.

“Cancer immunotherapy is a promising method to treat cancer patients,” said Jianxsun Song, Ph.D., assistant professor, microbiology and immunology. “Tumors grow because patients lack the kind of antigen-specific T cells needed to kill the cancer. An approach called adoptive T cell immunotherapy generates the T cells outside the body, which are then used inside the body to target cancer cells.”

It is complex and expensive to expand T cell lines in the lab, so researchers have been searching for ways to simplify the process. Song and his team found a way to use induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, which are adult cells that are genetically changed to be stem cells.

“Any cell can become a stem cell,” Song explained. “It’s a very good approach to generating the antigen-specific T cells and creates an unlimited source of cells for adoptive immunotherapy.”

By inserting DNA, researchers change the mouse iPS cells into immune cells and inject them into mice with tumors. After 50 days, 100 percent of the mice in the study were still alive, compared to 55 percent of control mice, which received tumor-reactive immune cells isolated from donors.

Researchers reported their results and were featured as the cover story in a recent issue of the journal Cancer Research.

A limitation of this potential therapy is that it currently takes at least six weeks for the iPS cells to develop into T cells in the body. In addition, potential side effects need to be considered. iPS cells may develop into other harmful cells in the body.

Researchers are now studying how to use the process in human cells.

Other researchers on this paper are Fengyang Lei, and Rizwanul Haque, Department of Microbiology and Immunology; Lynn Budgeon and Neil D. Christensen, Ph.D., Department of Pathology, Penn State College of Medicine.

This study was funded through the Pennsylvania Department of Health using Tobacco Settlement Funds, the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust and the Melanoma Research Foundation.

Peyton Manning underwent a stem-cell procedure before having neck surgery recently, Fox’s Jay Glazer reported today.

The treatment is not used in the United States and Manning sought a number of consultations and therapies before undergoing anterior fusion surgery Sept. 8. Manning, 35, has had three procedures on his neck in 19 months, but the Colts continue to hope he’ll be available this season. He remains on the active list and reportedly made his first appearance at the Colts’ facility Friday and Saturday.

According to ESPN, Manning received therapy and watched part of practice Friday.

[Transplantation of mesenchymal

stem cells in multiple sclerosis].

Abstract

To assess safety and tolerability of treatment with autologic multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in multiple sclerosis (MS), we have obtained autologic red bone marrow-derived MSC from 8 patients. Proliferation, immunophenotype and caryotype of MSC, their sterility, the absence of hemopoetic cells, chromosomal aberrations and signs of aging were controlled during the cell growth. The inverse injection of MSC in patient’s blood was conducted in accordance to the elaborated protocol in a short intravenous infusion in dose 2.0 x 10(6)/kg of body mass once in 30 days.

  • The duration of treatment was from 4 to 8 months.
  • The efficacy of treatment was assessed after 4, 8 and 12 months.
  • All patients tolerated repeated intravenous infusions of autologic MSC well with no significant side-effects as in the early as well in the remote periods of treatment.
  • The distinct positive effect was seen in some cases 2 months after the beginning of treatment.
  • The improvement of 0.5 point on EDSS was seen in 5/8 patients after 4 months.
  • After 12 months, the improvement of 0.5-1 point on EDSS was seen in 6/8, stabilization in 1/8, progression in 1/8.
  • These results revealed the safety of the elaborated protocol of treatment and the moderate clinical efficacy of treatment in non-curable patients or those with poor response to treatment that suggested continuing the study and enrollment of new patients.
