http://medical-job-australia.com/img/medical-australia.jpgAustralian grown-up flow cell company, Mesoblast Limited, today announced that its chief scientific advisor and founder, Professor Silviu Itescu, has been awarded a $1.5 million grant for pre-clinical and clinical unfolding of mesenchymal harp on full-grown stem cells.  The grant was awarded under the prestigious National Health and Medical Research Council’s Program Grants Scheme, with the $1.5 million allocation being made under a specific Memorandum of Understanding.

Professor Itescu said he was delighted with the Australian Government’s endorsement and its support for the development of adult stem cells as novel therapeutic strategies in patients.“The grant will be instrumental in sponsoring a number of clinical and preclinical studies using mesenchymal lineage adult stem cells, he said.“

There is enormous interest within the international medical community in the potential of adult stem cells to provide effective treatments for a broad range of human diseases and conditions and to vastly improve the quality of life for many people.

“Additionally, these therapies may result in significant reductions to ballooning health care costs, Professor Itescu said. The Chairman of Mesoblast, Mr Michael Spooner, indicated that subject to material transfer agreements, Mesoblast would make available its specialist Mesenchymal Precursor Cells for these and other Government and industrysponsored studies.http://www.mesoblast.com

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. — The first of a dozen major laboratories funded in part by California’s voter-approved stem cell initiative is opening in Sacramento.

The UC Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures opened Wednesday. The $62 million institute will bring together 200 scientists and lab technicians and consolidate the university’s stem cell research efforts under one roof.

Research already in progress at UC Davis includes using stem cells for HIV treatments, organ regeneration and injury repair in horses.

The institute received $20 million from bonds authorized by Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act of 2004.

Institute director Jan Nolta says UC Davis is moving away from the use of embryonic stem cells in favor of other techniques.

“NBC’s new drama Parenthood by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. One of the core story lines involves a couple slowly realizing that their son has Asperger Syndrome. I was so convinced by the the 8 year old actors portrayal of a child with Asperger’s that I thought he must have the disorder himself.

It turns out that the shows executive producer Jason Katims is the father of a child with Asperger’s.

In interviews, he has said that he wanted to portray the disorder in as accurate a light as possible. He succeeded in a big way, not only by showing the quirks of a child struggling with an autism spectrum disorder, but by showing how his parents and extended family grapple with understanding and accepting.
