College Student With Multiple Sclerosis Symptom-Free After Stem-Cell Treatment

Edwin McClure, a Virginia Commonwealth University advertising graduate student, says a stem-cell study he participated in appears to have cured his multiple sclerosis symptoms.

McClure said being hooked up to an IV for the steroid treatments forced him to confront this sickness. He suffered from extreme fatigue, allergy attacks, heat intolerance and bad balance. McClure said his symptoms made it difficult to spend time with his loved ones.

The trial used the patient’s own stem cells to regenerate the immune system and reverse the symptoms of MS. The trial consisted of 21 patients. According to the lead author of the study, this is the first study to show an actual reversal of the disease.

Her doctor wasn’t sure if she could carry it through and husband Abinash, a non-thalassaemic, thought she was being too ambitious. On Wednesday morning, she gave birth to a boy after months of treatment and medical supervision during which she received at least 15 transfusions.

The newborn has not only brought smiles back to the Barman household but could also cure his mother of the potentially life-threatening ailment. Stem cells taken from cord blood are being used to treat Pinky’s thalassaemia, which, doctors said, has never happened anywhere in the world.

VATICAN CITY (AFP) — Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday admonished visiting US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Catholic who advocates abortion rights, that “all Catholics” should uphold the Church’s teachings on life.

Benedict “took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church’s consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death,” the Vatican said in a statement.

These “enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists as well as those responsible for the common good of society to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development,” the statement said.

Pelosi, the highest-ranking US official to see the pope since President Barack Obama took office last month, describes herself as an “ardent” Catholic while advocating reproductive rights.

My last column addressed the “old” seven deadly sins. That list included pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed and sloth.

To be sure, each of these in various forms can have adverse consequences as they are manifested in the workplace.

Today’s subject is the set of “new” deadly sins as articulated by the Vatican last year. Reverberating from the seven cardinal vices, set forth by Pope Gregory I in the 6th century, the new list combines a social dimension, according to Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, the Vatican spokesman.

…The new seven mortal sins include: genetic modification, human experimentation, polluting the environment, social injustice, causing poverty, financial gluttony and drug abuse. Each of these has a business ethics dimension and relevance today…

► The category of human experimentation apparently is directed toward some morally dubious (embryonic) stem-cell research.

According to a member of the President’s Council on Bioethics, the debate over (embryonic) stem-cell research centers on the basic question regarding the moral status of a human embryo.

The public has been divided on (embryonic) stem-cell research. A recent survey found that 61 percent of the adults polled supported it and 31 percent opposed it.

One big issue in this arena seems to be how the embryos were obtained…
